(Dir: Eran Kolirin, 2007/Israel/France/USA/89 mins/ Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles)
A band composed of members of the Egyptian police force heads to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. Featuring Sasson Gabai as Tawfiq, the traditional band leader, and Ronit Alkabez’s as the lonely Jewish restauranteur the band interact with, the film is both comic and poignant in equal measure.
(Dir: Dariush Mehrjui, 2008/Iran/106mins/Persian with English subtitles)
In his latest film, award-winning director Dariush Merhjui explores a musical theme. Ali is a talented musician who is forced to choose between his traditional family, who disapprove of his music, and his instrument. He pursues a successful career in music and marries Hanieh, but eventually his drug addiction rips all of his relationships apart. With stellar performances from both Bahram Radan (Ali) and Golshifteh Farahani (Hanieh), the film challenges many of the current taboos in contemporary Iranian society. While the film was banned in Iran the soundtrack, combining traditional santur with pop music, was a huge success.
